Question from Paul Allison Doncaster January 2010

Hi Richard

Just found your excellent site and I'm hoping against hope that you can point me in the right direction of one of my wife's ancestors. His name was Henry Barlow and the first information we have of him is his marriage to Ann White at Darfield in 1824 when he claimed to be a farmer. His first child Thomas Henry was born at Burntwood a year later followed by another son William in 1827 baptised at Darfield. His wife was buried at Felkirk in 1830 but her abode was given as Brierley. Henry then remarried Elizabeth Hartley and had two more children in Darfield before dying in 1836 in Great Houghton, aged given as 34. As he died before civil registration or censuses, we have no clue as to where he came from and have so far (after searching everywhere conceivable for ten years) drawn a blank.

Our searches have been confined to parish records but we wondered if there was any other information/documentation that exists that might help us in our search.

We now live in Doncaster but my wife, and lots of her ancestors back to 1600, comes from Wath on Dearne.

Thanks a lot

The Burntwood area you are interested in is located in Great Houghton in the extended parish of Darfield. The boundary with Brierley in the parish of Felkirk is very close by. At the time of your Henry Barlow there were quite a few people living there but now there is just an elderly peoples care home and three cottages. I have many records of Brierley residents through the ages but the name Barlow is not listed. As you say detailed record keeping did not start until the 1840s. The main land  owners in Darfield area and much of the land around Wentworth were the Fitzwiliam family of Wentworth Wood House you may find what you are looking for among Wentworth Fitzwilliam archives. I believe they are held in the Local history archives at Sheffield.
