Question from Gary web master January 2010

Hi Richard
I was asked  in the taxi tonight for information on Briercliffe House (Voddens old house). Can you help at all. Thanks Richard
Gary web master

Reply from Richard

Briercliffe House was built about 1899 on part of a field called Cliff Croft that was owned by G. S. Foljambe in 1840 and farmed by Thomas Scorah.

On the 1901 census it was occupied by Mr. Wilson Lamb and his family. He was a retired grocer and draper from Park Road Worsborough Bridge. In the 1940s it was the home of Mr. Dykes a colliery manager.

Mr. J. Wilkinson Cudworth Secondary Modern Boys School head master and his family lived there before the Vodden family came to live there in the late 1950s.

The house and outbuildings have seen many changes.
