Bring and Buy Sale

The Brierley Girls Brigade are to join with the ladies from the Methodist Church, to hold a bring and buy sale and coffee evening at the Methodist Church on Monday 15 January at 7pm. The proceeds will be for the Brierley ECG Heart monitoring machine appeal. Everyone is welcome. The Girls brigade will then meet every Monday at 7.15pm and will be led by Janet Baxendale

 

Allotment and Garden Society

The Brierley allotment and garden society will meet the first Sunday in every month. The meeting for February will be held in Brierley social club at 11.30am. New members are invited. For details contact Barry White on 01226 713897

 

Social Club

At the Friday night social evening held in Brierley club, the quiz winner was Jeff Ennis. The killer question was not won and will be played for £20 on Friday. Joanne Cessford won the mixed grill while Gerry Talbot won 4 pints of beer. Other Prize-winners were Albert Taylor and Kenny Clarke. The Sunday night tote winner was Ralph Chaplin with numbers 6 and 27. The prize was £80. Next Sunday's artiste will be Steve King

 

Grange House

The winner of the raffle at Grange House social evening on Friday was Nora Harrison. Monday's winner was Vira Foster. Forthcoming events at the house include a pie and pea supper on Tuesday 23 January a 6.30pm. While on Saturday afternoon 24 February, the warden, Linda Milburn will escort 44 residents and friends to the Lamproom theatre at Barnsley to see The Old Bull and Bush. All the tickets have been sold for this trip

 

ECG Appeal

The appeal was boosted this week with a pledge of £300 from the Grimethorpe Neighbourhood Watch. Brierley Town Council Mayor Councillor Chris Sykes as also pledged £25 towards the appeal from his Mayor's allowance, he also donated a bottle of whisky. Councillor Alex Vodden as donated a bottle of brandy

 

Pool

In the Ladies Tuesday night pool league, the Three Horse Shoes played at the Athersly Social club and won 3-2. Lisa Dickinson, Jane Kirk and Joan Skeet were the winners. The team will play all their home matches at the Coach and Horses while refurbishments to the Three Horse Shoes take place

 

Coppins

There will be a service of hymns and prayers led by the Rev Gill Newton at Coppins residential home on Sunday at 2.30

Methodist Church

The Rev Leslie Newton will take the Sunday morning service at 10.15am, while the Rev Gill Newton will take the evening service at 6pm. Mrs J Hughes will present this weeks flowers

 

Women's Fellowship

Mrs J Hodkiss will be guest speaker at today's (Wednesday) Woman's fellowship at the Methodist church at 2-15pm. Margaret Watson will be pianist

 

Boys Brigade

The Brierley Boys Brigade juniors will meet at the Methodist church on Wednesdays at 6.30pm and will be led by Mr and Mrs Edwin Hambleton, while the seniors will meet on Thursday at 6.45pm where Mr David Parkinson will join with Edwin Hambleton in leading the boys

 

Recreation Evening

The ladies from the Methodist church hold a recreation evening on Tuesdays at 7.30pm

 

Three Horse Shoes

The Three Horse Shoes closed its doors this week while refurbishment, which is expected to last about 6 weeks, begins next week

 

Concert/auction

There will be a concert/auction in Brierley social club on Monday 29 January in aid of the Church Drive surgery ECG heart monitoring appeal. Jason Fraser, a very popular local artiste as offered his services free. Donation boxes will be placed in St Paul's Church, Grange house and Brierley School for anyone wishing to donate gifts for auction. Jean Hanson (nee Horsefall) a former Brierley girl but now living in Scarborough has donated 3 flower arrangements towards the appeal. There will be raffle tickets on sale at the post office. A number of prizes will include a £25 Marks and Spencer's voucher, a framed photograph of old Brierley, a bottle of whisky, a flower arrangement, 2 bottles of Babycham, 2 bottles of wine and a cuddly toy. The raffle draw will take place on the night of the concert. George William Oldroyd

The death occurred suddenly in Grange House, of George William Oldroyd age 69. George had lived in Grange House for 4 years but had spent most of his life in South Hiendley, working as a miner at Nos. 3 and 4 pits. When the pits closed he worked on motorway maintenance up to his retirement. George leaves a sister Margaret Schofield. The funeral will leave 21, Lakeside Ryhill at 12pm on Monday 15 January for cremation at Pontefract. Flowers will be taken to Felkirk Church after the service, where George's ashes will be interred with his mother
