Harvest Festival

Football fans from all over Barnsley will converge on Brierley Social club tonight for the annual Harvest Festival, which have been organised by Chris Sykes for the past five years. Mick McCarthy the Northern Ireland Manager and former Barnsley FC player has donated a Northern Ireland football shirt which was worn by one of the Irish players in this years world cup and bidding is expected to be high. The event is proving very popular and Chris always manages to come up with some wonderful gifts with this year being no exception. Over the past 5 years with the help of local residents, Chris has managed to raise over £5,000 for charity. This year it will be in aid of the Barnsley Multiple Sclerosis Society. Auctioning will begin at 8pm and if anyone wishes to donate any gifts for auction please telephone Chris on 01226 711255.

Presentation surprise

At their end of season presentation evening on Saturday, there was a surprise in store for the young players from Brierley Cubs and Tigers when they were presented with the South Kirby and District Summer League ‘Fair Play Award’. Each team member was presented with an individual award. Nick Gillott who has been appointed Sports Coordinator for the area presented trophies and there was a surprise for the team coaches Dave Henstock and Rob Taylor when they were presented with a tankard each from the players and parents for their hard work during the season. Supporters’ player of the year went to Ryan Cook and Billy Dodd. The Player’s player of the year trophy was awarded to Kane Clarke and Jack Holroyd won Sportsman of the year. Mathew Holroyd was player of the year. The presentation was held in Brierley Social club and the team coach Dave Henstock would like to thank everyone who has helped throughout the seasons and to those who have made donations.

Brierley Historic Photographic Society

Meets on Monday and Wednesday 10am till 12 and Thursday night 7pm till 9pm when Jean Mann will be available to answer any Genealogy questions.

 

Garden and Allotment Society

Meet the first Wednesday in every month in the Three Horse Shoes at 9pm.

 

Brierley Labour Party

Meet the last Sunday in every month in Brierley Social club at 10am.

 

Brierley Village (Community) Partnership

Meet every second Tuesday in the month in their offices at Brierley Hall at 7pm.

 

Quiz Night

Every Thursday in the three Horse Shoes starting at 9pm.

 

Brierley Village club

Artistes Friday and Sunday. Bingo with cash prizes Tuesday and Thursday.

 

Hillside Tara

Coffee morning every Tuesday with bingo and raffle. 10.30am.

 

Boys Brigade

The boys Brigade Juniors will meet on Wednesday while the senior boys will meet on Thursday at 6.45pm.

 

Girls Brigade

Meet in the Methodist Church Hall on Monday at 7.15pm.

 

Dickensian Trip

Linda Milburn the warden from Grange House is organising an adult’s Dickensian trip to Bakewell on Saturday 7 December. Tickets are £6 each and the closing date for names is 30 September. The trip will leave at 9am and return from Bakewell at 3.30pm.

 

Girls Brigade

Janet Baxendale will lead the Girls Brigade in the Methodist Church Hall on Monday at 7.15pm.

 

Christmas Cards

Old Brierley Christmas cards are now on sale from the Historic Society. These can be personalised if required. All proceeds to the society’s events fund.

 

Spiritualist

On Sunday at 7pm Leigh Davies from Wakefield will take a service of hymns, prayers and clairvoyance. Next Sunday Sid and Joyce Pickersgill will take the service. To ease traffic congestion on Church Street visitors are asked to use the Brierley Hall car park.

 

Ladies Recreation

There will be a ladies recreation evening in the Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

 

Methodist Church

The Rev R Barker

will take the Sunday morning family service at 10.15am and the evening service at 6pm will be taken by Mr K Lodge. The cleaning stewards this week are Mrs J Baxendale and Mrs E Plowman while Miss P MacLean will provide the flowers. There will be a ladies recreation evening on Tuesday at 7.30pm

 

Primary School

Classes BD and BG will visit Whitby on Wednesday as part of their lessons on coastal studies and the history of the resort.

 

Coppins

Bonus ball winner on Wednesday was Becky Halliday while Mavis Butcher won on Saturday.

 

Hillside TARA

A coffee morning will be held at the Tara offices on Hillside on Tuesday morning from 10 while 12. Bingo and raffle will also be played. Christine Hirst was the winner of last weeks raffle.

 

Action Team for jobs

The team are available every Wednesday morning at 10am in the office of the History Society at the rear of Brierley Hall. Assistance will be given in job search and training

 

Women’s Fellowship

Mrs M Ellis was guest speaker at the weekly meeting of the Brierley Women’s Fellowship on Wednesday. Margaret Watson was pianist. The ladies meet every week in the Methodist Church Hall at 2pm.

 

Danny Oats

Photographs from the Danny Oats penny lick day are now on view in the post office. ‘Old Brierley’ Calendars and Christmas cards are also on sale with profits going to the society’s funds. If you would like to have your cards personalised with a photograph or text please call into Brierley Hall or telephone Gary on 01226 716957. The volunteers now meet on a Monday and Friday from 10am till 12. The Genealogy class meet every Thursday between 7 and 9pm. The winner of the members raffle for the scarecrow was Mary Niven with winning number 206.

There will be a ‘Rock and Roll night in Brierley Village club on Wednesday 9 October when the ‘Moonshiners’ will provide the Entertainment.

 

Grange House

Clarence Burton won Monday nights raffle at the Grange House social evening. Jock Hinks won on Thursday while Norah Harrison claimed Friday’s prize.

 

Social Club.

The winning numbers in the Sunday night tote for £100 were 23 and 28. The winner was Mary Niven. Tonight Friday the artist will be Marty while Ali Jordan will provide the entertainment on Sunday. This weeks gallon draw winners were, Chris Sykes and Joyce Lindley. Chris Sykes also won the raffle and claimed a mixed grill while Carol McCauley won the quiz on Wednesday. Monday is games night and bingo will be played Tuesday and Thursday.

Boys Brigade

The Boys Brigade Juniors, Led by Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Hambleton will meet on a Wednesday at 6.30pm while the Boys Brigade Seniors will meet on Thursday at 6.45pm and will be led by Mr. Edwin Hambleton & Mr. David Parkinson.

 

Concert

There will be a concert by the Barnsley Cooperative Band at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall tonight. Tickets can be obtained by telephoning Mrs Elizabeth Hambleton on 01226 713654. The proceeds are towards the new building fund and everyone is welcome.

 

Hillside TARA

Margaret Wright was the winner of last weeks raffle at the coffee morning, which is held in the Tara offices every Tuesday morning at 10am.

 

Methodist Church

Mr F Bolton will take the Sunday morning family service at 10.15am and the evening service at 6pm will be taken by the Rev T Keen. The cleaning steward’s this week are Mrs B Brier and Mrs P Fewster while Mr and Mrs Charlie Hall will provide the flowers.

 

Clothes Party

There will be a clothes party in Grange House this Monday at 10.30am till 12. Refreshments will be provided and everyone is welcome. There will also be a raffle. All proceeds in aid of the residents outing fund.

 

Labour Party

There will be a meeting of the Brierley Ward Labour party on Sunday morning at 10.30am in the social club. Last months New Century draw winner was Joe Hayward who received £50. Subscriptions are now due.

 

Garden & Allotment

The Garden and Allotment Society will meet in the Three Horse Shoes on Wednesday at 9pm. New members welcome.

 

Primary School

Children from class BG have been taking their cycling proficiency test this week. Future events include a visit to Canon Hall on Thursday for class BG and class BD will visit Wakefield Cathedral on 10 October.

 

Coppins

St Paul’s

Father John Baskerville will lead the Eucharist service on Sunday morning at 9am.
