‘Intercepted at Sea'

A book has just been published by two Navy men from Brierley, Leslie Howson and John Nixon, entitled ‘Intercepted at Sea:  The Human Cost of Insecure Communications During Two World Wars,’ See Your Contribution for full story

 

Labour Party

At the Labour party General meeting on Sunday members expressed concern at the lack of progress on the bowling green. Councillor Vodden also reported that an urgent meeting had been arranged with planners to try and ensure that some kind of community facility was provided if the proposed sale of Brierley Hall for residential development went through because Brierley was fast becoming one of Barnsley’s biggest housing estates and that is not acceptable. The Annual General meeting will take place on Sunday 28 January in the social club. The winning number in the century club draw for December was 35.

 

Methodist Church

The Reverend Terry Keen will take a Covenant service on Sunday at 10.15am while M r O Wright will take the evening service at 6. The welcoming stewards will be Jean in the morning and Brian in the evening. Jean will provide flowers.

 

Boys Brigade

Both the Junior Boys and Company Section meetings will meet on Wednesday night in the Methodist Church Hall. The 7 to 11 year olds meeting will take place from 6.30pm till 8pm and the older boys will meet from 7pm till 9. Edwin and Elizabeth Hambleton lead the boys. The boys are in training for a table tennis competition, which will take place at Scarborough on 14 February. They will also take part in a Bible and general knowledge quiz and marching/drill competition at Harrogate the first week in March. The second weekend in March will see the boys attend the 10th annual Church Family Fellowship weekend at Cober Hill, Cloughton. For further details telephone Edwin Hambleton on 01226 713654

 

Pop In

The next Pop in morning at the Methodist Church Hall will be held on Thursday 25 January. All residents are invited to pop in for tea, coffee and biscuits and a chat. Proceeds are towards church funds.

 

THS Quiz

The Thursday night general knowledge quiz, which is held at the Three Horse Shoes, restarted last night after the holidays. The quiz takes place every week at 9.30pm. There is also a music quiz on Sunday starting at 8pm.

Ian loses brave battle for life

Grimethorpe St John Ambulance Brigade Divisional officer Ian Walker aged 62 of Norwood Drive Brierley, lost his three and a half years fight against leukaemia on Sunday December 17 2006. He leaves a wife Ann, children Maxine, Mark and Richard, and granddaughter Imogen. See local stories

 

Wood Carving course

A 10-week woodcarving course, which is open to everyone, has started in Brierley on a Tuesday evening from 7pm till 9. For further details contact John Nyland at the Grimethorpe Partnership on 01226 718283

 

Women’s Fellowship

At last weeks Women’s Fellowship meeting the ladies enjoyed open readings. They meet every Monday in the Methodist Church Hall at 2pm.

 

Spiritualist Church

There will be a healing in the sanctuary tonight (Friday) from 6 till 6.45pm followed at 7pm till 8 with an Open circle. Susan Dilks from South Elmsall will take the Sunday evening service at 6pm till 7.15pm. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

 

Brierley Cubs FC

The under 7s started of the New Year with an excellent victory at home to Hoyland coming out 3-2 victors. Morgan Armitt who was the man of the match scored twice and Lynden Devoy was the other scorer for Brierley. The team will play away to Mexborough Rangers on Sunday kicking of at 11.30am.

 

Line Dancing

Line dancing will take place tonight Friday and on Monday in the Methodist Church Hall at 7.30.

 

Grange House

At the social evening last Thursday Joyce Howell won the raffle while Jock Hinks claimed Friday’s prize. Violet Gash won on Monday.

 

St Paul’s Church 

The Sunday Mass with hymns will be at 9.30am and in the evening at 6pm there will be Prayer & Exposition service. Today Friday there will be daily Mass at 3pm and a confirmation class at 7pm. Daily Mass will also take place on Monday at 10am. Father Peter Needham will conduct the services. On Thursday 25 January, there will be a Feast of the Conversion of St Paul taken by Bishop Martyn of Beverley. Marriage or Baptism enquires to be made to Father Peter at St Luke’s Church Grimethorpe on Friday between 6.30 and 7.15pm.

 

Ladies Recreation

A ladies recreation evening takes place in the Methodist Church Hall on a Tuesday night at 7.30.
