Lewis Bowering

Died in BDGH on Sat 11 April aged 86. Formally of Grange House Brierley. The funeral took place at St Paul’s church Brierley with Father Peter Needham last Monday. The service was followed by cremation at Ardsley. He leaves a wife Nellie and family.

 

Town Council

The next meeting will be in the council chambers, Welfare Park Grimethorpe on Wednesday at 7pm.

 

Brierley Playmates

Councillor Dorothy Higginbottom and Graham’s taxi have donated to the appeal by the Brierley Playmates towards having a telephone line installed in their headquarters in Brierley Park. If anyone would like to make a donation please contact Gary on 07847 003336.

 

Village club

There is a quiz night every Monday starting at 9pm. The winner last week was Chris Sykes.

 

Three Horse Shoes

There is a quiz night at the Three Horse Shoes on a Thursday at 9.30pm and on Sunday at 8pm there is a music, conundrum and general knowledge quiz. On Thursday Roz and Neil won the nearest too question. Ian and Debbie won the quiz on Sunday while Hannah and Dave came second.  Ian and Debbie also won the conundrum. The Head to head was not won and will be for £70 next week.

 

Surgery

Ward Councillor Dorothy Higginbottom will hold a councillors surgery in Grange House on Wednesday 6 May at 10am till 11.

 

Pool

In the Smithies Wednesday night pool league, the village club team had to cancel their game against the Vic from, the players from the social club lost to Cudworth Vic. Next week they will play at home to the Spencers Arms.

 

Boys Brigade

Both the Junior Boys and Company Section meetings will take place in the Methodist Church Hall on Wednesday. The 7 to 11 year olds meeting will take place from 6.30pm till 8pm and the older boys will meet from 7pm till 9. Edwin and Elizabeth Hambleton lead the boys.

Clement Wadsworth Devonport

Died in BDGH on Friday 17 April aged 79. Formally of Hillside Mount Brierley. The funeral will be on Tuesday 28 April at 2.30pm at St Paul’s church Brierley with Father Peter Needham followed by internment at Brierley cemetery. He leaves a wife Hazel and family.

 

Spiritualist Church

There will be no Healing in the sanctuary until further notice. Tonight at 7 there will be an Open circle till 8pm. On Sunday at 6pm there will be a demonstration of mediumship taken by Karen Raniey from South Kirkby. Refreshments will be served after each service. On Wednesday at 7pm there will be a demonstration of mediumship special where visitors are asked to bring a photograph of a loved one. The demonstration will be performed by Maggie Carrington from Somerset and tickets are available from the church or pay on the door.

 

Grange House

The winner of the social evening raffle on Monday and Friday was Audrey Marsh while Rita Ford claimed Thursday’s prize.

 

Women’s Fellowship

The women’s fellowship meets in the Methodist Church every Monday at 2pm. Last week the ladies enjoyed readings.

 

Methodist Church

The Sunday morning service will be at the Emmanuel Church in Barnsley and will be taken by the Reverend S Poxon who is the President of the Methodist Church conference. There will be a karate club on Monday at 7pm and on Thursday a bible study will take place at 7pm in the surgery rooms on Church Drive. The majorettes will meet on Friday at 4.30.

 

Women’s Institute

The next meeting of the WI will be on Wednesday 14 May in the Methodist Church Hall. The ladies will meet once a month but times and dates vary.

 

Pop In

The next meeting of the Pop in club that is held at the Methodist church Hall will be on Thursday 7 May from 9.15am till 11am. Everyone is invited to pop in for tea, coffee, biscuits and a chat. Proceeds will be towards Church funds.
