Paddock Farm

Paddock farm stood at the top of Barnsley Road. The front of the house on the bottom left (now demolished) faced the Three Horse Shoes and was Kenyon’s/Moors butchers shop. The old slaughterhouse (now demolished) can be seen further back still on the left. The fields at the top of the picture behind the houses are now the allotments. The old stone building just before the houses, has been renovated and is now owned by Jim Harrison, and at one time was the police station and cells.

Circa late 1990s

Brierley taken from Grimethorpe Colliery area overlooking Shafton workshops

The large red brick buildings formed part of the old Brierley Colliery but at this time were used by Amco services. The path running down the field from this site was the old tramway (nicknamed Ginny Run) that took coal from the old colliery to the washer at Ferry Moor; it also took waste to the tip at Peter Wood. A new housing estate has now been built on this land (August 2005). Just on the left of the photograph is the Grange estate on the right is the bungalows at the top of the Hillside estate. The white roofs are Shafton workshops.

Post office area

David Hardwick from Barnsley Road took this photograph while flying over Brierley with David Iveson. The photograph was taken with a standard 35mm automatic camera. On some of the photographs I have used extension tubes on the lens to try and get a close up (before the days of scanning). This is why some of the photographs are poor quality but still very interesting.
