Voddens House and Butchers Shop

Proprietors at this time were Richard (Dickie) and Madge Vodden. The butchers shop were the out buildings seen on the right of the photograph. The present owners have now demolished these. A front facing extension has also been added

This photograph was taken from the back of the old Brierley Colliery Yard and more recently Amco offices. The view is looking towards Grange estate on the left and Hodroyd Cottages (Pit Row) in the middle of the photograph. New houses are built here now (January 2006)

Netty’s' Church Street

This building was for many years the beer off. At one time, while tenanted by the Crossland’s, the upstairs was a regular meeting place for the spiritualist faith before the present day Spiritualist church was opened in 1956. The middle building, which on this photograph is an extension to the shop, was, in the 1960s a printers shop run by Mr Jubb. Bob Grainger one time manager at the Three Horse Shoes owns the properties, which have now converted back into two houses (February 2006). Dorothy Whitehead who was the lollipop lady at the local school for over 30 years owns the end house

Brierley Hall car park

View from the back of the Hall showing the incongruous brick extension added to the hall in the 1960s by Hemsworth Rural District Council. Part of the original servants quarters can been seen to the right of the picture. The protruding red brick extension houses the boilers and the council chambers are above. To the left are the offices of the Social services

Brierley Hall Home care team offices

This room is part of the extension by Captain Roland Addy in the early nineteenth century. The room was also used as the Colliery Managers office in the film Brassed off. The window is facing the barns at Hall farm (Baxendales). The chap emptying the litterbins is the caretaker Gary Hotchins

Methodist Church

The Methodist Church was, up to 1934, a Working Men’s club. On the 7 May 1919, Mr William Sharpe who was the Headmaster of the school from 1903 to 1931 bought the plot of land on which the church now stands for £250 and sold it to the club trustees the following day for £490

This photograph was taken from the old Brierley Colliery yard. The chimneystacks are from the homes on the Hillside estate. The large conifer that you see is in the back garden of 20 Hillside, the home of Dave Smith and Susan Mangham

This photograph was taken from the home of Charlie Hall number 2 Park Avenue. He informs me that although the land to build these two houses on was bought in 1987, it took a further six years before the homes were completed
