‘Netty’s'
Church Street
This building was for many years
the beer off. At one time, while tenanted by the Crossland’s, the
upstairs was a regular meeting place for the spiritualist faith before the
present day Spiritualist church was opened in 1956. The middle building,
which on this photograph is an extension to the shop, was, in the 1960s a
printers shop run by Mr Jubb. Bob Grainger one time manager at the Three
Horse Shoes owns the properties, which have now converted back into two
houses (February 2006). Dorothy Whitehead who was the lollipop lady at the
local school for over 30 years owns the end house

This
room is part of the extension by Captain Roland Addy in the early
nineteenth century. The room was also used as the Colliery Managers office
in the film Brassed off. The window is facing the barns at Hall farm
(Baxendales). The chap emptying the litterbins is the caretaker Gary
Hotchins

Methodist
Church
The
Methodist Church was, up to 1934, a Working Men’s club. On the 7 May
1919, Mr William Sharpe who was the Headmaster of the school from 1903 to
1931 bought the plot of land on which the church now stands for £250 and
sold it to the club trustees the following day for £490
