Eva
Draper and Rev David Earl
This
photograph featuring Eva Draper and Rev. David Earl (Methodist Minister
for Brierley, Grimethorpe, Hemsworth, South Hiendley and Ryhill) was taken
in the new vestry of Brierley Methodist Church in 1975.
The occasion was the retirement of Eva from the job of caretaker of
Brierley Methodist Church, a job that she had taken on 'temporarily' in
1941! Having done this job
for 34 years, including the scrubbing of old-fashioned floors etc. and
getting up at 6 a.m. to light the boiler, with a payment of 6 shillings
(30p) per week, she had decided to give it up.
She was presented with a transistor radio.
However, since no one was willing to take it over, she took the job
again and did it from 1976 to 1995 at two pounds per week retiring again
at the age of 86.
Information
supplied by Mary Harrison (nee Draper).
