North Wall of the Nave - Westernmost Window
This window is dedicated to Ernest William
Litherland who died February 21st 1919 following his return from
active service in Salonika during the Great War 1914-1918 aged 29
years. The left hand light of this window depicts St George and a
green dragon. St George being the patron saint of England, soldiers,
and boy scouts was widely decorated as a soldier saint from early
times.
The central light shows St Michael with a red
dragon and in the background an unidentified church and above is the
badge of the Royal Flying Corps. Michael is honoured in the west s
captain of the heavenly host and in the east he was looked on as the
protector of the sick.
The right hand light depicts St Alban with the
Abbey church of St Alban in the background. Alban is venerated as
the first Christian martyr who was executed for refusing to renounce
Christianity.
