Action Team for Jobs

 In partnership with Brierley History Society,” Action Team for Jobs” set up a ‘drop in’ job search facility in the History Society rooms, rear of Brierley Hall.  Action Team for Jobs had been set up to help jobless people into work. The Photograph shows Members of the Brierley History Society Management Committee left to right stood: Councillor Alex Vodden, Paula Hutley, Joan Gomersall and Chris Sykes, being shown how the Action Team for Jobs works by sitting left to right: Fezana, Paul and Julie.

Friends of Kenya Jumble sale Grange House

Left to right: Unknown Friend of Kenya from South Elmsall , Doreen and Peter Britton and their daughter Tracy.

Peter and Doreen (nee Hobson) Britton from Church Street and other 'Friends of Kenya' raised £280 at this event. During 2000 they managed to raise a total of £1,700. The cash raised built a classroom for 32 children onto the existing Kariba School in Kenya of which Peter and Doreen have been long supporters.

The Kabin Fire Church Street

The “Kabin” as it was known was set alight by vandals. It stood in the grounds of St Paul ’s school and at this time was being used as a youth club. The building was in fact a portacabin that was placed in the grounds around 1966/7 when it was used to house the infant’s class when the Institute over the road was sold to the British Legion. The Institute used to house the infants class before this.

Brierley band Fruntslide

Left to right: Dean Fletcher lead guitar, Michael Ennis vocals and Graham Hotchins Bass guitar, song writer and founder of the band. The band won a competition to have their CD “Still Waiting” cut at Beaumont Street studios Huddersfield . Their music was also played on Dearne FM.
